“They’re not songs, they’re tunes!” From ancient melodies to modern pop, the bagpipes are a versatile instrument with a unique sound. They are capable of stirring the most despondent of souls, or enhancing a joyful celebration. When a unison melody is played on the chanter of a set of bagpipes, the drones provide the harmony in a rich full sound. Traditional tunes are often complex and technically demanding, however this complexity is what provides aural interest. When harmony is introduced in a tune, it is two-part harmony and at a 2:1 ratio (melody to harmony) within the section. Several modern pipe bands have started writing their own countermelodies to distinguish themselves in competition or in the recording studio.
